THE EU LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR AI: the impact of the AIAct on Criminal justice and Investigations

The second edition of the EUDiCRI school will take place on the Italian Alps, in Bardonecchia (Turin), Villaggio Olimpico, from September 2nd to 7th 2024

The 2nd edition of EUDiCRI Summer School will shed light upon specific application of Artificial Intelligence in criminal proceedings with main regard to the requirements set by the brand new Artificial Intelligence Act. The recent act is a gamechanger in the EU governance of AI, that will have huge impact also outside Europe. An unprecedent effort in cooperation between lawyers and computer scientists is at the basis of the EU action. Thus, the EUDiCRI school aims to reach out to professionals and scholars in both computational and legal areas of expertise. The Course will provide also specialised sessions for both lawyers and computer scientists, to complement their own traditional skills. In fact, after the AIA will enter into force, the legal and computational realms will be intertwined more than ever. As the EUDiCRI project [ERASMUS-JMO-2022-MODULE, 101085622] addresses the topic of the criminal justice area, the specific focus of the program will be exploring the use of AI as a supportive tool in this specific field.

Such rich program will take place in the outstanding panorama of the Alps, at the border between Italy and France, with broad chance to experience outdoor sports and authentic mountaineering emotions (Bardonecchia is served by railway from Turin, and therefore, connected with the main Italian cities and international airports, via Turin central railway stations of Porta Nuova and Porta Susa).

1st Int.l EUDICRI Winter school: “LEGAL AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE EU REGULATION OF DIGITAL CRIMINAL FORENSICS”

December 11th  to 16th  2023

The first edition of the EUDiCRI school on LEGAL AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE EU REGULATION OF DIGITAL CRIMINAL FORENSICS went on from 11th to 16th December 2023, in Alessandria, Italy, at the University of Piemonte orientale.

A group of 18 participants – PhD students, post doc and undergraduate students, from different home institutions (Piemonte orientale, Pisa, Turin) – and a team of 9 speakers, from several Universities, worked on the broad topic of digital forensics in criminal proceedings. The approach has been purely interdisciplinary and both legal and computational issues were analysed. In the immediate aftermath of the approval of the AIAct, on Dec 9th, there has been much attention to the forthcoming framework established  by the EU Regulation, although the official text is not yet available. The group was strongly motivated and there has been fruitful interaction between speakers and participants. The EU legislation has been the framework for the whole program and the prevalent feeling is that, based on the standard academic knowledge of EU legislation of the participants, the EUDICRI school has strongly enhanced the awareness of the pivotal role of the EU in the governance of the digital turn.

At the end of the challenging program, the participants took a final exam and received their certificate. There have also been social occasions, to establish mutual acquaintance and enhance research networks between both younger researcher and professors from different universities…

Thus, save the date for the next EuDICRI school, in summer 2024. The program will be released early January 2024.

The purpose of the organisers was to give an added social value to a moment of entertainment: supporting and promoting rehabilitation projects is a common mission to both EU and academic institutions.
